Director of Optics and Display Research
Facebook Reality Labs
Successful Virtual and Augmented reality will ultimately be based upon technology that enables novel user applications and experiences. We will explore some of these perceptual experiences and discuss the challenges necessary to overcome to make this possible. The focus will be on seamlessly overlaying digitally created visual content on real-world viewing.
Barry Silverstein is Director of Optics and Display Research at Facebook Reality Labs (FRL). At FRL he leads teams dedicated to inventing optical technologies to enable the dream of Augmented Reality that is all day wearable, socially acceptable, and nearly indistinguishable from the real world. Prior to joining Facebook, Barry was Senior Director of Research at IMAX. There he lead teams across two countries to deliver the highest performing, largest projection systems in the world known as IMAX with laser. This laser projection technology was invented by Barry and his team at Kodak where he spent 28 years developing optics for other applications such as data storage, satellites, and laser printing. He has obtained over 60 patents for this work and is a graduate of the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics.
