Freeform optics offer designers the flexibility to conform optical systems to unique geometries that would otherwise be unattainable. We developed and will present a method for designing optical systems with freeform optics that is based in aberration theory. Using this method, we designed a variety of a systems for augmented reality packaged to fit within a sunglass form factor.
Aaron Bauer graduated with his PhD in Optics from the University of Rochester in 2016. He now works as a Senior Research Engineer at the University of Rochester. His specialty is lens design with an emphasis on freeform optical design. He has worked on systems such as microscope objectives, spectrometers, telescopes, and visual systems.
